Some hints regarding searching:

  • The AND button next to each searchable field can be switched to OR or NOT. Within a field such as SUBJECT, use & for "and" (e.g., cocaine & heroin), / for "or" (e.g., cocaine / crack), and ! for "not" (e.g., marijuana ! medical).

  • For truncation, use * (e.g., addict* will pick up addict, addicts, addicted, addiction).

  • For date ranges, use : (a colon) for "through" (e.g., 1995:1998), < for "less than," > for "greater than," <= for "less than or equal to," >= for "greater than or equal to."

  • For more detailed information and help screens on library database searching, Boolean operators, and use of this search engine, please visit the ETOH database of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), which uses the same Inmagic search engine.
